For riding professionals, long-range tourers and urban commuters alike, the Arai SZ has become the choice of premium open-face helmets. It’s easy to see why. The combination of protection, light weight, comfort and open, all-round visibility make the SZ a unique, and special, proposition.

The very first SZ design, introduced back in 1988, opened the door to a new riding experience from Arai, and the model has evolved, constantly and consistently, over the decades.

2023 sees the SZ gain ECE R22-06 approval and EVO status, without significant changes. Arai’s Priority for Protection, the core design philosophy of producing rounder, smoother and stronger outer shells to improve ‘Glancing Off’ performance, is key in this attainment, as is the rigorous in-house criteria that all Arai helmets must satisfy.

As with each and every Arai, it’s the sum of the details coming together to produce an even greater result than their sum that makes the SZ-R EVO the benchmark open face helmet it is. The Variable Axis System (VAS) design effectively lowers the visor pivot point by using a dual pivot assembly. This allows the shell to be smoother around the critical temple area.

The PB-CLC2 outer shell itself is manufactured using a special Z compound of various resins, and balanced by a lightweight inner liner, that lowers the centre of gravity.

Comfort in the SZ-R EVO is supreme over long distances, thanks to interior contact points that cradle the rider’s head evenly. The interior is also fully adjustable and designed for the use of glasses and speakers. Ventilation is taken care of by the same diffuser technology as used by the flagship racing-spec RX-7V EVO, with an added aero stabiliser.

The SZ-R EVO comes with a Pinlock insert included.

SZ-R EVO Features

General

Outer shell: PB-cLc2 (Peripherally Belted Complex Laminate Construction)

Arai’s Peripherally Belted Complex Laminate Construction greatly increases shell strength and flexibility while maintaining low weight and a lower centre of gravity. Positioned across the top of the eye port, this band contributes to the use of a thinner EPS liner which greatly enhances the upward field of view. A specially designed “mechanically expanded fibre mat”, sandwiched between the inner and outer layers of Arai’s proprietary Super Fibre Laminates, is used to reinforce and bond these two Super Fibre layers without adding significant weight to the helmet. The latest “Z-Mixture” resins increases material adhesion requiring less resin for a stronger bond between materials for a thinner and lighter shell.

Variable Axis System (VAS-Z I)

With VAS-Z I, the visor mounting position is lowered, yielding an average of an additional 24mm of smooth shell across both temple areas when compared to the previous generation, in pursuit of the ideal smoother shape that increases the ability to glance off energy. As a result, this has made it possible for more of the shell to be smoother along and above the test line of the Snell standard.

Ventilation

SZ-R EVO Ventilation

The RX-7V EVO-inspired diffusers are designed for excellent aerodynamics, and work together with the Air Wing to improve stability. Efficiency of the intake scoops (compared to previous models) is increased by 19%. The air intake vents are adjustable through three positions: closed, half open and fully open; they also help to improve sealing for decreased wind noise and water intrusion.

Front ventilation

Center top vent - intake

The top vent provides 11% more airflow than the previous design. The bigger switch makes opening and closing easier and there are two positions: closed and fully open, to adjust the airflow and prevent water intrusion when fully closed.

Diffuser system

20mm longer and straightened for improved aerodynamics, working together with the Air Wing to improve stability. The efficiency of the intake scoops of the diffusers has increased by 19% from the previous generation model.

Brow vents

Fresh air can enter directly to the forehead area without the need for holes in this critical area of the shell and impact absorbing liner. For specific models the ventilation is extended to the temple area.

Rear ventilation

Neck exhaust vent

To enhance hot-air extraction from the interior. Increases the ventilation effect at the lower part of the helmet.

Side exhausts

Produce low pressure behind the rear vent for better hot air extraction. Integrated in the shell for better aerodynamics, reduce wind noise and prevent buffeting at speed. Inside, a small foam dam helps to absorb and diminish excessive noise, without reducing ventilation performance.

Aerodynamics

Air Wing® non-adjustable

MotoGP tested and designed to greatly reduce drag, turbulence and buffeting resulting in more comfort and additional top-speed. It improves stability of the helmet at high speeds or when braking hard and reduces noise.

Shield

Pinlock insert lens included

Effectively prevents misting and fogging of the visor, even under extreme wet and damp conditions. May be cleaned and changed easily.

PRO Shade System (Option)

An excellent example of Arai’s vision on protection and safety is the development of the PSS, the Pro Shade System. A clever drop-down sunvisor, combined with well known, wide vision Max Vision visor with optional Pinlock inlay lens.

Interior

Antimicrobial Liner material

Helps maintain neutral acidity levels close to human skin and antibacterial consumption. With the aim of a softer, deeper and even more comfortable fit we developed a softer liner frame material. The liner also has adjustable temple padding that allows for a customized fit.

Replaceable Ear Cups

Ear cups may be easily removed. All parts (replaceable or not) can be cleaned with lukewarm water and mild soap. Rinse well after cleaning, blot dry with a towel and let air dry completely before reassembly. Never machine wash or use heat to dry. Interior parts in different size thickness are available for a custom fit for every rider.

• Remove by pulling the back of the ear cup out first and then sliding out the tab
• Install by sliding the front tab of the ear cup into the base and pressing in the two studs at the back

Replaceable Interior

The complete interior may be easily removed. All parts (replaceable or not) can be cleaned with lukewarm water and mild soap. Rinse well after cleaning and never dry in direct sunlight or near a heat source. Interior parts in different size thickness are available for a custom fit for every rider.

Speaker pockets

Build in communication systems are popular, but the problem is often that the room for a speaker is limited or just not present, causing unpleasant pressure points. The speaker pockets, offering room for mounting speakers without effecting comfort or fit. (Speaker not included).

5mm ’’Peel Away’’ Ear cups/Cheek pads

Giving even more ability to craft the perfect fit and comfort, the cheek pads feature a 5 mm peel away layer for added room if needed.

Multiple-density EPS inner shell

Arai’s proprietary 1PMDL (one piece multi-density liner) is the only one of its kind in the world and offers incredible protection by being fine-tuned to each shell size, in each model and in each head size, with varying EPS densities. It can make the most of its ‘glancing off’ ability because the EPS density varies according to the corresponding shell surface, allowing the shell to remain ‘round and smooth’.

Water resistant layered Ear cups

A water-proof mat prevents rain from coming in, it also works as sound absorption adjusting the noise level to mild.

Removable slit for glasses

The top slit of the ear-cup can be removed to insert glasses more easily.

Comfort

Double-D Ring Chinstrap

The flat and D-shaped rings on the chinstrap fit smoothly against the chin. No moving parts, no corrosion problems and just pulling the tab is enough to loosen the fastener.

Arai Features

5-year limited warranty

All Arai helmets are warranted against defects in materials and workmanship, and are serviceable only for the properly fitted first user for 5 years from date of first use, but no more than 7 years from date of manufacture.

Arai In-house Criteria

Arai helmets are designed to meet the stringent Arai In-house criteria, in addition to the mandatory ECE standard.

Different outer shells

Unlike many other manufacturers Arai provides one size outer shell for each two-helmet sizes for most models. Together with different shaped outer shells for different models it is almost impossible not to find the fit you are looking for.

Double-D ring device

The flat and D-shaped rings fit smooth against the chin. No moving parts, no corrosion problems and just pulling the tab is enough to loosen the fastener.

Five times inspected

Each Arai helmet goes through five separate quality-control depart­ments: after the shell is made, after painting and graphic completion, after assembly and two in-process inspections.

Glancing Off

To minimize impact energy getting into the helmet, it’s crucial that a helmet can slide over a surface. Arai believes that a Strong, Round & Smooth shell helps to increase a helmets ability to protect the rider during an impact. Shells with sharp edges or vent ducts that don’t break off can reduce the helmet’s ability to slide, sending energy into the helmet, or even enhance rotational energy.

Organic shape

The organic shape of an Arai outer shell offers a more natural appearance, seals better and conforms more to the head’s natural shape for improved comfort, fit and to help minimize wind turbulence.

Penetration tested

All Arai helmets are penetration tested, although not required by European helmet standards. The Arai penetration test is performed with a 3kg test cone that strikes from a height of 3m on the helmet.

Smooth shape, better protection

The smooth outer shell of Arai helmets is designed to glide without unnecessary resistance. You don’t want to decelerate your helmet more than necessary. That’s why all Arai vents and ducts are designed to break off during an impact.

Strong outer shell, soft inner shell

Arai uses a very strong outer shell to spread impact forces and a soft inner shell to absorb remaining energy. The multiple-density EPS inner shell is made using a unique technology of combining three to five densities in various areas as a single component.

Washable interior

The premium quality interior of any Arai helmet can be easily cleaned, in place, with mild soap and lukewarm water.

Approval

ECE R22-06

ECE R22-06 requires a much more stringent testing process than the previous ECE R22-05 and includes an oblique test to measure rotation.
